- The Pacific Northwest has been my home since
graduation from college(Whitman). Happily married to a
native Oregonian for 29 years. I have 2 stepsons and
a beautiful 26 year old daughter who graduated
from Cal Poly SLO...her dream was to go to school in
California! I recently retired from a career as a
school counselor. I enjoy working out, traveling,
trying to learn golf, volunteering, reading and being
thankful each and every day. I have many fond
memories of my years at Awalt and growing up in the
Bay Area. I would love to hear from other Awalt

- What's New?
- I was browsing Radwin and noticed my profile sort of
disappeared... Poof, I'm back!
After Graduation I became a technical sales
representative. This involved helping manufacturing
plants and/or the components that made up their end
assemblies more efficient and therefore cost
effective. I have worked with fortune 1000
corporations or represented manufacturers from every
State in the Union, Europe and the Pacific rim. Very
interesting work if you can get it.
My mother died in 2002 and that event caused me to
stop and take stock of my life. So at the ripe old
age of 50, I retired. I have reduced my travel to
for pleasure only. Now I have reinvented myself at my
beloved Smith Lake. I buy and sell recreational
property. I can tell you this is quickly becoming a
full time job. I am meeting my new life with
enthusiasm and vigor!!
My son turned 21 a few days ago and will be graduating
from college in January. Life goes on. I hope you
are all having great lives. I look back at Awalt very
fondly.

Curator at another house museum, the Flagler Museum.
From there I went to England to be Director of the
American Museum in Britain. I spent 6 years there and
returned last year to be Chief Executive at the Armory
Art Center. I just got married to a man I met in
England, and we live in West Palm Beach. He is a
business consultant named Paul Coombs. We have a
miniature dachshund who runs the house.

- Have stayed pretty much in the south bay area
since 1970. Unhappily married 1985, divorced 1987,
remarried 1991 (happily) 1 son Cliff 14 and a stepson
Bill. Self employed real estate appraiser, I drive by
Awalt often and think of some of the best times i
never
remember having. It must have been the herb that Bill
Rauch, Dwight Fowler and I put in the applesauce cake
in Mrs. Stangs boys home economics class which also
sent me packing to oregon to finish my senior year of
high school. My best wishes to all the class of 1970.
Update May 1, 2002. Hello to all, moved to Gilroy
(Eagle Ridge) on the golf course-now no work will get
done. All else is OK my best to all Awaltians.

- What's New?
- Ok, I'm still in Sunnyvale and working on enjoying
life. When I have time I enjoy hiking in the
foothills, camping and fishing in the Sierra and the
occasional day bird hunting with my Dad in the San
Antone Valley. I also enjoy winetasting, especially
California Zinfandels from the Sierra Foothills.
I work for SAP America as a Software Applications
Consultant. I often travel in my job but am currently
working on a local assignment at SAP Labs in Palo Alto.
Its really nice NOT to get on a plane twice
a week! Its great to eat home cooked meals, and sleep
in your own bed.
My twin daughters are grown, graduated from college
and employed. Now, if I could only get them both moved
out of the house at the same time...
That's all for now. I hope to see everyone at the next
reunion.

full of older children. We both work locally although
Bob travels to Europe about half the time. I see a
lot of Awalt alumni fairly often. Our women's group
meets once a month for dinner and includes some of
Awalt's best. I just bought a painting from the very
talented Jane Altizer Kleinschmidt who is living in
Montana. Becky Anderson Collins and Kathy Kares
Sutton and I are planning a trip to Paris in a month.
We have done New York a couple of times. Our dear
friend, Sue Lawrence, is the victim of early onset

- What's New?
- Let's see...graduated in 1970, went to Santa Clara for
a year, my father got transferred (again) to Canada, so
off I went to University of Alberta for a while, then
my father got transferred (again) so I followed the
family--it took years to break that habit!--to ALGIERS,
which finally broke me of that habit. (It was hellish)
I escaped and returned to the States, got a journalism
degree at the University of Kansas, where I met my
husband Robert. (His original pickup line at the dorm
cafeteria: if you don't want that dessert, I'll take
it...)
I've been a business journalist covering the high tech
industry for quite a few years. Robert got a fellowship
to do his PhD at the University of London, so we went
overseas for three years. We now live up in the Santa
Cruz Mountains. Robert does field work in places like
Papua New Guinea, and will soon be on an Animal Planet
TV show looking for giant tree crocodiles. (I did say
when we got married that I never wanted to be bored. I
haven't been, although terrified more than once.)
I start working for a dot.com in August (dbusiness.com)
as a reporter covering high tech startups.
We also have started a dot.org: The Virtual Museum of
Natural History at curator.org. It is a worldwide
effort to create a database (The Web of Life) for
accurate species descriptions) and connect readers
(from kids to environmentalists to government officials
to specialists) to verifiable accurate scientific data.
Take a look. My picture is on the site and you will see
I haven't changed much--still short curly hair (let's
not mention the bifocals.)

- I am planning on coming to my first reunion in
October! I am happily living and working in Carmel
Indiana. Life has been very good to me. I have
been living here in Indianapolis since I graduated
from DePauw University. It was a wonderful place to
raise my family. I am an RN and RLC working in
women's health.
I have 2 wonderful sons which are both married. No
grandchildren yet. Oldest is 31 and
working as an attorney in San Francisco. Youngest is
27 and is urban planner in Denver.
I love travel, running, cycling, snow skiing and
generally being outside. Excited to visit at the 40th!

- What's New?
- Hello, again to all who attended the reunion! It was
fun seeing everyone! And thanks to the committee for
all of their hard work! Nice job!
I promised I'd fill this in better, so here goes...
Larry & I have been married for 27 years after
meeting at UCDavis. We have two girls: Nicole is 23
and ready to embark on the life of a Navy wife(she's
been married for 1 year), Colleen is 19, attending
Jr.College locally, & very involved in theater both on-
stage and back-stage.
We have moved around from Ohio to Washington state
(both when Larry was in the Air Force) and then from
San Jose to the Morgan Hill area (San Martin). I have
been a school teacher off and on for a number of years
& have decided I enjoy substitute teaching since there
are no staff meetings or paperwork comparatively!!
Larry has moved around a bit, but has been working at
Becton-Dickinson for the last 10 years.
I finally realized my life-long dream of owning and
breeding horses. We have 3 Arabs and 3 Quarter Horses
currently, plus a "menagerie" of cats, dogs, ducks,
etc. It feels a bit like a farm & definitely the
"country" even this close to the city!
Feel free to e-mail us... we love visits from old
friends! Hope we'll see even more of you at the next
reunion!!

- From 1992-2003 was living near Washington, DC
working on a whole host of wildlife conservation
issues. For eight years I worked as conservation
director and then vice president for Defenders of
Wildlife and was heavily involved in the return of
wolves to Yellowstone National Park. Then I worked
for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as their vice
president of environmental protection and restoration
and spending a lot of time on Bay waters--both
professionally and for recreation.
I then served as executive director of the Community
Environmental Council in Santa Barbara heading up a
50-person staff working on energy, pollution,
transportation, stream restoration, education and a
whole host of other environmental issues. I also
finally settled down and got married in January 2005
to a wonderful woman--Carlene Marie Ramus--a first
for both of us.
Since we got married it has been an adventure and I
have held non-profit CEO jobs in Vermont, DC and now in

- What's New?
- I've spent 30+ years in the Pacific
Northwest, and called Arcata/Eureka area home.
I attended Humboldt State University for close to
forever--I really enjoyed it and the surrounding
community. I reveived a B.S. and a M.S. in Natural
Resources Mamagement, and Vegetation/Forest Ecology.
For work, I spent most of the time working as
vegetation ecologist conducting research in forest
ecology and natural resource management of Federal
and State lands throughout California, Oregon, and
other areas on the Pacific coast.
A few of my more noteworthy jobs:
--I worked as Wilderness Partolman in the Trinity Alps
Wilderness (Shasta/Trinity National Forest ) for three
years. Here I met a historic character; George Jorstad
(of “Jorstad’s Cabin” on topo maps). George and his
wife had built a cabin on a gold mining claim on the
North Fork of the Trinity River, in the Trinity
Wilderness in 1937! In later years I transcribed his
journals from that time, and we published it
as “Behind the Wild River.”
--I was as a “Porpoise Observer” for the National
Marine Fisheries Service. I was put on a commercial
tuna purse-seiner ship that traveled around out in the
Pacific off of Panama and Columbia trying to catch
tuna. I was there to see how many porpoise they killed—
I suggest that you all eat only Solid White Tuna, to
avoid killing porpoise.
--I then spent my time, on land, as a
botanist/ecologist with jobs in private consulting,
and jobs with the Forest Service, Park Service, and
Universities. These jobs included;
--Botanist for the Hupa Indian Tribe in Northern
California,
--Interpreter and tree planting Inspector in the
Olympic National Forest,
--collected data on old growth forests throughout
Southwest Oregon for the classification of habitat
types of old growth forests,
--collected data in research on edible wild mushrooms
on the coast of Northern California,
--and collected much more data for the classification
of riparian/wetland vegetation types throughout the
Sierra.
I also spent some of the early net years working as a
computer techie(website design, etc) for a variety of
DotOrg's.
I moved back to Los Altos in 2004 to take care of some
medical adventures including, and associated with,
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (things are going well
now). I stayed down here to spend more time helping my
mother -who died in 2008.
I am now working for Caltrans at the Oakland HQ as an
Associate Environmental Planner Biologist/Ecologist
for transportation projects in Sonoma County--tracking
down endangered species and wetlands-- and working
to get permits from all of the Federal and State
resource agencies.
I now live in Hayward.
Best wishes to all.

- My husband of 32 years, Robert, and I have lived in
Martinez since 1981. We returned to Northern CA when
our daughter, Debby, was a baby. We lived in So. CA
for 7 years while my husband finished school and
started to practice Optometry at Kaiser Permanente.
In 1983, Michael was born and I continued to be an at-
home mom. I had received my BS in Child Development
in 1973 from UC Davis and taught several days each
week at our Jewish temple. I was also a professional
volunteer raising funds for several local groups.
In 1990, I received my Multiple Subject teaching
credential at St. Mary's College, Moraga. As of 2007,
I have taught for the Mt. Diablo School District as a
middle school science teacher for 13 years and the
past 3 years as a science and math teacher at the
continuation high school. Some of us just can't get
enough school...
My husband and I are seriously considering retirement
in the next few years. In recent years we have
traveled to many warm places. Our adult children live
in the East Bay. Debby graduated from UCD and is a
professional photographer. Michael graduated with his
bachelor's degree from Ex'Pressions in Emeryville. He
is a video and sound production director and his
company can be located at colemanfilm.com (Check it

I am planning on attending the reunion the first
weekend in October, 2007 at Cuesta Park. See you

- After Awalt and Foothill, I went to the California
Institute of the Arts, where I got my BFA and MFA. I'm
now living in Los Angeles. There's a show of my recent
drawings at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum
from Feb. 26-Apr.29,2000; and a traveling retrospective
of my work will open here in LA in 2002. All that
said, like most artists, I work at a job! I do
advertising design for the LA Weekly. I also have a
wonderful partner, Bob, who's a rabbi. (Where is Cindy
Rosenthal, now that I need her??) This website is great
(Lisa Miller, class of '69, told me about it) – does
anyone know where Linda Sekeley or Dave Stone are? Or
Cindy, for that matter?
Update: Bob and I are living in Los Angeles, raising his daughter, Suzie,
who is 15, willowy and surgically attached to the instant messenger
function of my laptop. I'm now teaching at Art Center College of
Design, having a wonderful time with younger artists. (I've got to that
age where, when they ask how old I am, I just reply: "Older than you.")
Work in the studio goes well; I had a show last year here in LA with one
painting going to the Museum of Contemporary Art here and a drawing
to the Hammer Museum. The website I've linked to will take you to
some images of my work.
My folks still both live in Mountain View near Awalt, and my dad and I
often go for walks up there. It's quite spectacular - hard to recognize
the former sites of such famous landmarks of our time as the giant
weed in the middle of the courtyard!
By the way, I did reconnect to Cindy Hailpern (Rosenthal) and Dave
Stone - still wondering where Linda Sekeley is these days. Heard from
Linda Curtis last year (graduated with the class of '69) - she now lives
in the Seattle area with her partner. Had a lovely visit with Patience
Milrod and her family recently, they're thriving in Fresno.
Okay, now it's beginning to sound like one of those Christmas letters,
so I'll stop. Hope you're all thriving as well!

Well as you can see I fled the mainland and am living
with the "Aloha Spirit" here in Maui.
I have two boys Wesley turning 21 in a few days and
Jared turning 20.
After Wesley was born, we first moved to French Gulch
and lived in an old miner's log cabin(Our"summer
vacation home"). When they started school we moved
into town-Redding (Still Northern California)and
raised both boys there. Went from one extreme to
another to another.
I moved on to Arizona and helped certify "The Global
Express" for Honeywell. (It's a pretty spectactular
aircraft!) After 2 years in Arizona,(too hot for
me!!!) I moved here to Maui and I love it. Different
life style and great weather.
Just turned a "TuTu" (Grandma in Hawaiian) on January
2,of this year. I told my kids I was too young, but
now I am truly enjoying the thought of
parents "payback".
Sure would like to hear how all is.
This is great- Who would have thought that 30 years
down the road, we would be able to find all the haps
on our class like this!!!!

Credential with CLAD and supplementals in Science and
Social Science in Summer of 1999, and from Sacramento
State University in 2003, a Special Education Level II
Credential in Mild/Moderate disabilities. Some of my
collegues are looking forward to retirement and I am
very much looking forward to a career!!!
My husband of almost 28 years died unexpectedly of
heart failure in June of 1999, the same summer I
received my multiple subjects credential. I am
definately a stronger person from that experience. At
that time, my two daughters and I were in college and
my son was a junior in high school. I am very proud
of them all for keeping focused in their lives.
My oldest daughter Angela got married at Lake Tahoe in
July of 2001. They then moved from California to
Minneapolis, Minnesota to a home they bought. My other
daughter Aimee is working full time at an insurance
agency and my son Grant is attending Shasta College as
a business major in information technology. He loves
computers and is still very much into soccer, both
indoor and outdoor. Although he has been involved in
soccer, even participating in Europe, his name still
pops up in the Grass Valley area in playing football
for Nevada Union. He is remembered as
the small town hero who kicked the winning 35-yard
field goal in the last few seconds of pouring down
rain and very muddy and windy conditions for first
place at his division I high school. He was a rookie
kicker in his senior year and kicked 48/56 fieldgoals
(including 12 out of 12 in a playoff game). He was
known as "Mr. Automatic."

- After high school I attended Foothill college for a
few years. I worked full time for AT&T and held
several different positions. I married in 1976 and had
a son born in 1977, now age 27, and then a daugher
born in 1980, now age 24. I was widowed in 1988 when
my husband died.
I am currently working as a supervisor for a major
cable and internet company in the bay area. My
mother still lives in Mountain View and I live in San
Jose. It's nice to see so many familiar names on
this website. I hope everyone is happy, healthy and
safe. Feel free to say hello in an email any time.
Take care.

- What's New?
- OK, technically I graduated a year early in 1969 but
otherwise I would have been class of 70. I've never
regretted graduating early.
I went to design school at the Fashion Institute of
Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. After
graduating, I designed clothing for five years, after
which I went into window display, where I worked for
the next 14 years (Macy's, Bullock's, freelance). I
got married in 1988 to a musician, but we divorced in
1994. We bought and fixed up two vintage houses
together, and after the divorce I continued to do
house restoration for a living. I am currently
renovating house #10. It will be the keeper house, as
it is a huge, amazing Arts and Crafts home built in
1905 by a man who owned a lumber yard. In the course
of all this renovation, I picked up a lot of obscure
knowledge which I eventually synthesized into a book-
Bungalow Kitchens, which was published by Gibbs-Smith
in May 2000.( Ah, wouldn't my English teachers be
proud.) My second book, Bungalow Bathrooms, was
released in 2001, and in November 2003 my third book,
Linoleum, was released (note: it's not about vinyl!).
My next book, Bungalow Details Exterior, came out
in the fall of 2004, followed by the coffee table book
Bungalow:The Ultimate Arts and Crafts Home shortly
after. My last book (so far),Bungalow Details:Interior,
was released in 2006. I have also written articles for
Old House Journal, American Bungalow, Old House
Interiors, Style 1900, and the San Francisco Chronicle
Magazine.I write when I feel like it for the Berkeley
Daily Planet.
Because of the books, I have also gotten to appear on
TV- once on Food Network's Ultimate Kitchens, and
three times on HGTV's Curb Appeal. (In one Curb Appeal
show I gained a fake husband- TV is not like reality)
All right, my life is starting to sound really
glamorous, so let's have a little balance here. In 2000
I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. I went
through six months of chemotherapy and I am currently
in remission and hope to stay that way. There are,
however, no guarantees. In fact, three years ago I
relapsed into a indolent lymphoma called Chronic
Lymphocytic Leukemia. The use of the term indolent
always makes me think of a cancer cell lounging in a
hammock with a margarita. Indolent cancers are harder
to treat, as they don't respond to chemotherapy, which
kills fast growing cells, and these cells aren't
growing that fast. So treatment is mainly with
monoclonal antibodies, which, for the patient, are a
lot more pleasant- no hair loss, nausea, etc. So far
it's been kept in check, but it is chronic, so it keeps
coming back.
Here's the lesson I learned from my illness: don't put
off doing what you want to do, because life is random
and you may never get the chance.
And a note to any teachers or staff reading this: I'm
57 years old now and I still have no respect for
authority!

- I followed my passion, journalism, and got a bachelor's and master's in
journalism from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern
University. I spent 30 fascinating, and sometimes exciting, years
working as a reporter and editor for newspapers, ranging from a small
(but fun) paper in Ohio to The Washington Post, where I was the
national technology reporter, to three-plus years at a large paper in
Tokyo, Japan. I had two stints at the San Jose Mercury News, as a
reporter covering the early days of Silicon Valley and doing
investigative pieces and later as an editor overseeing technology
coverage and assisting with international and national commentary. I
feel really fortunate to have had such a stimulating career and to have
met so many interesting people along the way.
I left newspapers a few years ago, just before the industry crashed,
and I now do some editing and tutor kids in writing. My husband of 28
years and I are both very oriented toward Asia, and we have a
wonderful teenaged daughter who attends school in Palo Alto.

Well Mark and I finally did make it. We retired this
past spring and now live in the beautiful Cochella
Valley. We have a daughter Rebecca who will be
married this next spring and our son Joey is the
principal of an elementary school in Skokie, IL. We
are also the proud grandparents of our darling
Meital. She is one year old and we absolutely adore
her. Can't get enough of her from the computer since
she is in IL too. Try to get together with the gals
up North whenever I am in the area - Dad still lives
up there and my 3 brothers are still in their
respective homes. Life is great - Come visit if you

a great guy from Mountain View. We don't have any kids
but we do have 3 big dogs and 2 cats. I worked for the
U.S. Geological Survey (in Menlo Park, CA and Carson
City, NV) for 17 years as a Systems Administrator. We
moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1989 and two years ago
I transferred to the Bureau of Land Management. We
enjoy living about 15 miles north of Carson City in a
valley with a small lake and great views of the Sierra
Mountains. We also enjoy fishing, camping and riding
our dirt bikes. Hope to see many of you in July!

- I see that my last update predicted our cruising
departure date to be mid-September, 2009. Well, we
left on Sept. 27 -- not half bad! We sailed to San
Diego with several stops along the way. Then we
traveled with a large group of boaters (about 190
boats in all) from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas
arriving on Nov. 5, 2009. We continued on from there
and are currently located in La Paz. It is beautiful
here, sunny and warm, and we have no desire to
return. However, for the first three summers, I may
return during the summer to refill the cruising
kitty. If there is a reunion this summer, I'll be
there.
If you are interested, you can follow our adventures
at www.muggsandlarry.com. We are cruising on a 45'
ketch-rigged sailboat. My high school Spanish has come
in very handy, too!

- I graduated with a b.s. degree in graphic design from San Jose State.
After working in Silicon Valley as a freelancer I moved to the Los
Angeles area and got a job at the J. Paul Getty Museum. In 1996 I
started my own business—I design exhibition catalogues and
monographs for museums.
I met my husband, Tod Fitch, in 1991 on a ski trip and we married in
’92. Because he is a talented software engineer, head hunters from
Silicon Valley found him and convinced us that his future was here
instead of L.A. We bought an Eichler in Sunnyvale in 1999 and have
been slowly refurbishing it. We love living in the Bay Area.

8, a boy 6 (as of fall 2003). My wife Lisa

Rover missions that will land on Mars in January 2004 -

- I've been happily married to another Awalt grad
Jim Amato for 32 years. We still live in the ole
home town and both love that we stayed in the
Bay Area. We have 2 great kids, our son
Jameson is a firefighter with the City of Santa Clara
and our daughter Joanne is living in New York and
determined to be a working actress; she has
had success in parts in an off-off broadway show and
some regional theatre shows. I am currrently
enjoying my freedom from the 8 to 5 grind and working
on remodeling our home. I love the outdoors and have
really been getting a kick out of hiking the hills
around the bay area (reminiscing about the wild
parties we used to have up there!), swimming, and
gardening -- its great to have time to enjoy all the
bay area has to offer; I just need to keep Jim
working to support me!
Hope all is well with everyone from the class of 70!
